The VPIN Mathematical Derivation
Unlike traditional indicators that sample data at fixed clock time (e.g. 1-minute or 5-minute bars), VPIN samples transactions across fixed-volume buckets ($V$):
$$\text{VPIN} = \frac{\sum_{\tau=1}^{N} |V_\tau^B - V_\tau^S|}{N \times V}$$Where $V_\tau^B$ and $V_\tau^S$ represent buy and sell volume in bucket $\tau$, and $N$ is the number of rolling volume buckets. When buy or sell volume overwhelmingly dominates consecutive buckets, VPIN escalates toward 1.0, warning of acute liquidity collapse.

Why is volume-clock sampling superior to calendar-time bars?
Markets move in units of trade activity, not clock ticks. During quiet hours, calendar bars contain zero information, while during flash crashes, thousands of trades occur in seconds. Volume clocks preserve information density across all volatility regimes.
